Why fit a rear roller, and how to choose one

It protects the van from expensive damage

Loading timber, sheet materials or extension ladders over the back of a van is the easiest way to damage it. Without a roller you have to lift each item high enough to clear the roof edge, and sooner or later cargo scrapes the rear doors and roof line. That is not only untidy: it scratches through the paintwork, exposes bare metal and leads to rust. A roller gives the load a smooth pivot point instead, which protects the vehicle and its resale value.

It makes loading a one-person job

A rear roller turns loading into a single smooth movement. Rather than lifting and shuffling awkward lengths across the roof bars, materials slide into position. For heavy sheet materials or long pipe runs that means less physical strain, fewer handling injuries, and less time spent at each stop.

It fits in about half an hour

Fitting a rear roller to an existing roof bar or rack setup usually takes around 30 minutes and needs only basic hand tools — typically a 10mm and a 13mm spanner or socket.

Getting the right roller

Rear rollers are both manufacturer-specific and vehicle-specific. A roller has to match the system already on the van: if you run Rhino roof bars, you need the matching Rhino roller for your exact model to get a secure fit. A roller bought for the wrong system or the wrong vehicle will not mount correctly.
